Celebrating the launch of our new Borehamwood Group – Join us as a volunteer!
Introduction
On the 1st of October, Herts Musical Memories (HMM) proudly launched its newest group in Borehamwood, and the event was a massive success! This exciting addition to our growing network has already brought joy and connection to people living with dementia through the power of music. With enthusiastic participation and a vibrant atmosphere, the Borehamwood group is off to a fantastic start.
Leading our weekly singing sessions are the incredibly talented Liz and Kerry, whose passion and musical expertise have already made a huge difference to the lives of those attending. We are also thrilled to highlight Christine and Peter, our fantastic volunteers, who were acting as our orchestra for the launch. As the group grows, we are now actively seeking more volunteers to support this important work. If you’re looking for a way to give back to your community and help people with dementia engage through music, we’d love to hear from you!
The Launch Event: A Day of Joyful Music
The launch event took place at Maxwell Park community centre, and sessions will continue running here. We were delighted to see a large turnout from the local community. The sing-along session featured timeless classics from the 1950s and 60s, bringing smiles to everyone in the room. It was a heartwarming moment to witness participants, some of whom hadn’t sung for years, join in and reconnect with songs that stirred fond memories.
Liz and Kerry, with their warm energy and experience, skillfully guided the group through a range of melodies, making everyone feel comfortable and encouraged to participate. The success of the event reinforced the incredible power of music to transcend the challenges of dementia and create moments of joy.
Early Success: Building a Community
Our weekly sessions continue to attract an increasing number of participants, many of whom return every week to enjoy the uplifting experience. Only time will tell how busy Borehamwood will be, however we are optimistic we'll see familiar faces. Caregivers have shared heartfelt stories about how these sessions provide comfort and a sense of relief as they watch their loved ones light up in response to familiar tunes.
The success of these sessions highlights the therapeutic impact of music. Even those who may struggle with verbal communication can find connection through rhythm and melody, creating a deep sense of engagement and belonging for both participants and their caregivers.
Volunteers Needed: Be Part of the HMM Family
As our Borehamwood group continues to grow, we are looking for volunteers to help us expand and reach even more people in need. Volunteers play an essential role in our sessions, from setting up the venue to supporting participants during the sing-alongs, and creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Whether you have experience working with people with dementia or are simply passionate about music and community service, we’d love to welcome you to the team.
Volunteering with HMM is a rewarding experience that offers the opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life. No musical experience is required—just a kind heart, a willingness to help, and a desire to contribute to the wellbeing of others.
