How Herts Musical Memories began
Herts Musical Memories (HMM) was founded in April 2017 by Kerry Brabant to continue 'Singing for the Brain', the service originally provided by the Alzheimer's Society. This service was discontinued due to changes to Hertfordshire County Council funding. It seemed unthinkable to Kerry Brabant, as an ex-Singing for the Brain leader, that this service should no longer be available to people in Hertfordshire. Personal experience had shown her just how important singing and music are for people with dementia.
"My father had vascular dementia, and towards the end of his illness he could no longer speak - but we could still communicate through singing. Towards the end of his life he was very ill and in a lot of pain. I put on the radio and a song came on that we both recognised. As I joined in with the music, he lifted his head and we sang together, it was the last moment we ever shared together.” - Kerry Brabant speaking of her father Terrence John Brabant. Moments like these demonstrated to Kerry the importance of keeping this service going so that all those effected by dementia can share the same special moments with their loved ones, improve their quality of life and spark happiness. With that, HMM was born!
The impact of music
By utilizing music therapy techniques, originally researched and developed by the Alzheimer's Society,
our group singing sessions offer numerous benefits. Regular attendance can enhance sociability, boost self-confidence, and reduce anxiety. There is scientific evidence that suggests music therapy can help slow down the impact of dementia. For individuals with memory difficulties, singing familiar songs can help them reconnect with their memories. As for our carers and family members- HMM can provide valuable support by offering a structured, supportive environment where they can connect with others facing similar challenges. This respite helps reduce stress and provides much-needed emotional support.
What to expect in a session
The singing sessions last 90 minutes with the first half an hour being a time for socialisation amongst individuals going through the same thing and a warm welcome from the group volunteers and singing leader. This is accompanied by light refreshments and a bite to eat. Following on from this, we begin the warm up with some light chair-seated exercise and vocal warm ups before we get onto the songs. We sing an eclectic mix of songs spanning the decades and welcome your recommendations. Lyrics are provided and everyone sings together - there is no need to be a good singer to join us! While singing is encouraged, there’s no pressure to participate—just come ready to share some laughter.
The sessions are delivered in a relaxed, welcoming environment in venues across Hertfordshire. To book a free trial session please get in touch via our 'Contact Us' page or telephone 020 8950 5757. After the trial if you’d like to continue singing with us we charge a small contribution of £6 per session for the person with dementia , with a loved one/ carer going free of charge. This can be paid on a pay-as-you-go basis or monthly.
It is the ability for people with dementia to connect though music that makes Herts Musical Memories singing sessions so special and so valuable for those who attend.
